Colorize Black and White Film

Recuro Media colorizes black and white film in your web browser. Our AI colors a few keyframes of every scene, you look at them and adjust them, and only then are the colors carried to every frame of your film.

How Film Colorization Works

  • Upload your film. Send a scan in MOV, MP4, MXF, MKV or MPG, in HD or 2K. Every file is analysed first: where each scene begins and ends, whether it is black and white or color, and whether it has black borders.
  • Choose Colorize. Pick the Colorize filter in the Job Settings, together with any of the restoration filters you need. Before you start, compare any frame before and after at no charge.
  • Review the keyframes. The job first colors keyframes from the beginning, the middle and the end of each scene, then waits for you. Make the colors stronger or weaker - from 50 to 200 percent, for the whole film or for one keyframe - or leave out a keyframe you do not like; every scene keeps at least one.
  • Approve and download. The colors of the approved keyframes are carried to every frame of each scene. Download the result in MOV, MXF or MP4.

The job waits for your review as long as it takes, so you decide how the film looks before the whole film is colorized.

Colorize and Restore in One Job

Colors look best on a clean picture, so colorization runs together with our film restoration filters. In the same job you can remove dust, scratches and mold, even out the light flicker of old black and white film, remove noise that changes from frame to frame, steady a shaky picture and add film grain back for the classic look of film.

Because scene changes are found first, the filters adapt to each scene: differences in sharpness, saturation and brightness between scenes are evened out, and up to two bad frames at a cut can be replaced. Colorize also brings color back to faded color film.

Need a larger picture? Colorize and upscale to Full HD or 4K in the same job - see AI upscaling to HD and 4K.

Which Film Works Best

Our focus is professional film from 16 mm to 35 mm and up, scanned professionally in HD or 2K. Raw and graded scans both work - make sure the scan is not under- or overexposed, because the service needs the white and black parts of the picture. 8 mm film and digitally sourced SD video can be colorized too, although the results depend on their quality.

Pictures up to 2K can be uploaded (2048 x 1556 pixels either way round, such as DCI 2K or a full-aperture 2K scan). More answers are in our questions and answers.
