Files and formats

  • Which file formats can I upload? Video in MOV, MP4, MXF, MKV, MPG or MPEG, and sound on its own in WAV or MP3. Upload in the browser or from one of our plugins.
  • Which picture sizes can I upload? Pictures up to 2K: up to 2048 x 1556 pixels either way round, which includes HD (1920 x 1080), DCI 2K and full-aperture 2K film scans. Larger pictures, such as a 4K scan, are refused - before the upload starts or when the file is checked - so export them at 2K or HD first. You can still get a 4K result: Output Scaling 4K upscales your film.
  • Which formats do I get back? A visually lossless, high-bitrate file in the format you choose: MOV (ProRes 422 HQ or 4444), MXF (DNxHR HQX or 444) or MP4 (H.264 or HEVC).

Film and scans

  • Can you restore 8 mm, 16 mm and 35 mm film? Our focus is professional film from 16 mm to 35 mm and up. The service can also be used for 8 mm film and for digitally sourced SD video, although the results depend on the quality of the material.
  • How should my film be scanned? Professionally, in HD or 2K or higher, and then uploaded at HD or 2K. Raw and graded scans both work. Make sure the scan is not under- or overexposed: the service needs the white and black parts of the picture to restore it fully.
  • Can you colorize black and white film? Yes. The AI colors keyframes of every scene, you review and adjust them, and the colors are then carried to every frame - see film colorization.
  • Can you restore the sound too? Yes: Reduce Noise, Increase Clarity and Normalize Volume restore a film's soundtrack together with the picture, or an audio file on its own - see audio restoration.

Jobs and turnaround

  • How long does a job take? It depends on the length of the film, the filters you choose and how many jobs are waiting. Jobs run on our servers in the cloud, around the clock; your workspace - or your plugin - shows each job's progress and an estimate of the time left. A colorization waits for your review of its keyframes before it finishes.
  • Can I see the result before I pay? Yes. Before a job starts, compare any frame before and after with the filters you have chosen - side by side or on top of each other, at no charge. The price of the job is shown before you start it.
  • Do I need to install anything? No. All you need is a web browser. If you edit in Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer or DaVinci Resolve, our plugins send clips from your timeline and bring the results back into your project. Developers can use our API.

Data security

  • Who owns my film? You do. You keep the ownership of everything you upload; we process it only to provide the service. Read the Terms of Service.
  • Do you train AI models on my film? No. Recuro Media does not use your uploaded media to train or develop machine learning or AI models.
  • How is my media protected? Every upload and download goes over an encrypted HTTPS connection, and every download is checked against the account it belongs to. Your account can be protected with two-factor authentication. Results are kept for 60 days after the job has finished, and you can delete your media and jobs at any time. More in our Privacy Policy.

Billing

  • How does billing by the second work? A job costs exactly the seconds of film it processes, with no minimum. There is one price for every filter and every combination of them; it depends on the size of the picture - HD, 2K, or a 4K result - not on the filters you choose. The price of a job is shown before it starts.
  • How do I pay? Jobs are paid from a prepaid balance that you top up in your workspace, or - by agreement - by invoice. The price is taken when a job starts; a job that fails, is cancelled or is deleted before it has delivered is refunded, exactly once.
  • What does a preview cost? Nothing. Comparing a frame before and after is free, and so is the price of a job before you start it.
