AI Upscaling to HD and 4K

Output Scaling delivers your film in Full HD (1080) or upscaled to 4K (2160), together with any of our restoration filters. It uses super-resolution scaling instead of a plain resize, so edges and fine detail stay sharp.

From Your Scan to Full HD or 4K

Upload your film in HD or 2K - up to 2048 x 1556 pixels either way round, which covers HD, DCI 2K and full-aperture 2K film scans. Then choose the size of the result in the Job Settings:

  • The size of your file - the film is restored at the size it has.
  • Full HD (1080) - smaller material, such as digitally sourced SD video, is scaled up to HD.
  • 4K (2160) - your HD or 2K film is upscaled to 4K.

A 4K result is always an upscaled one: pictures larger than 2K, such as a 4K scan, cannot be uploaded - export them at 2K or HD first. We recommend a scan that was made at HD or 2K, not one that was only scaled up to that size.

Super-Resolution, Not a Plain Resize

A plain resize only makes every pixel larger, so a picture gets softer the more it is enlarged. Super-resolution scaling works on the picture itself: edges and fine detail are drawn again at the new size, so they stay sharp instead of turning into a blur. That makes it suited to archive film that has to be shown on today's large HD and 4K screens.

Restore First, Then Upscale

In a job the picture is restored before it is scaled up, so dust, scratches and noise are removed at the film's own size and are not enlarged with it. Combine upscaling with any of our filters:

  • Dust & Scratches and Heavy Dust & Mold remove dirt and damage, Noise removes noise that changes from frame to frame.
  • Adaptive Sharpness sharpens detail as much as each scene needs, and Contrast Expansion brings out detail in a flat picture.
  • Reconstruct reconstructs washed-out or blurry film before it is restored.
  • Colorize, High Frame Rate and the audio filters run in the same job - see film colorization, frame interpolation and audio restoration.

Compare Before and After

Before a job starts, the Job Settings show any frame of your film before and after, side by side or on top of each other, down to the pixel - at no charge. Step frame by frame to judge the detail.

Delivered in Professional Formats

Every result is a visually lossless, high-bitrate file: MOV (ProRes 422 HQ or 4444), MXF (DNxHR HQX or 444) or MP4 (H.264 or HEVC). From Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and DaVinci Resolve our plugins bring the upscaled clip straight back into your project.
