Frame Interpolation and Natural Speed

AI frame interpolation creates new frames between the existing ones of your film. Use it for smoother motion with High Frame Rate, or to give silent film its natural speed back with Natural Speed.

High Frame Rate: Twice the Frames

High Frame Rate doubles the frame rate of your film - 25 fps becomes 50 fps. The new frames are not copies: frame interpolation works out what happens between two frames and draws the picture in between, so movement becomes more fluid. It suits pans, moving cameras and fast action, where a low frame rate looks jerky on a modern screen.

Natural Speed for Silent Film

Silent films were often shot at about 16 frames per second. Scanned and played at 24 or 25 fps, everyone in them walks and moves too fast. Natural Speed adds interpolated frames, so the film moves at a natural speed again.

Natural Speed makes the clip longer, so its soundtrack is not kept - which for a silent film is usually none at all. For a film with sound, see audio restoration.

Film Transferred to Video

Film that was transferred to NTSC video with 3:2 pulldown repeats fields of some of its frames to reach 29.97 fps. When such a file is analysed, the pulldown is removed and the film's own 23.976 fps comes back, before any filter runs.

Steady, Clean Motion

Frame interpolation works best on a steady, clean picture. Combine it in the same job with:

  • Image Stabilization reduces the high-frequency jitter from the time of scanning.
  • Content Stabilization reduces the shakiness of an unsteady camera.
  • Reduce Flicker evens out the flickering light between the frames of old black and white film.
  • Bad Scene Changes replaces up to two bad frames at a cut between scenes.
  • Dust & Scratches removes stray hairs and dust and retouches scratches.

The picture is restored first and the new frames are made from the restored ones; upscaling to Full HD or 4K comes after that, and colorization runs in the same job too.

On an Editing Timeline

Both filters change the timing of the clip. A result that has to keep the source's own frame rate - for example to replace the original frame for frame on an editing timeline - is therefore made without them. Our plugins for Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer and DaVinci Resolve send clips from the timeline and bring the results back into your project.
